Who are we?

Qamar Franji Eastern Arts

It all started in 1992 as research into a Moroccan SCA persona, and a whim purchase of a couple of drums.

Lauren learned dancing in the traditional way, by watching others dance at parties and listening to the music. Martin's early drumming was much the same. Then we found great teachers to refine and polish what was already there and began teaching our own classes.

At the same time, Lauren spent countless dollars and even more hours trying to find store-bought henna that would work on her. Finally a friend let her try some brought directly from the fields in Morocco and it stained dark and lasted. Once Lauren realized the secret was in getting good henna, she set out on a quest to get a working supply of it. After seeing the results on her, enough people wanted the same gorgeous color that she started getting it in quantity to sell, and a business was born. Now Qamar Franji offers several henna powders, pastes, essential oils, and everything else needed for henna on skin or hair.

Overall, Qamar Franji is a company dedicated to taking the things that have brought joy into our lives and sharing them with others. You can find us at SCA events and Renaissance Fairs, street fairs and private weddings all over New England and beyond. We also love teaching private and group classes. Come say Hi. We're always happy to share.

Henna Artist, Teacher, Dancer

Lauren has been a professional henna artist since 1993. She was first introduced to henna in the SCA, a medieval history recreation society, and her focus has been on henna's history and traditions ever since. In 2006, Lady Ghazalah al-Badriyyah (as Lauren is known in the Society) was inducted into the Order of the Maunche, the East Kingdom's Order of High Merit for the Arts, for her dedication to researching and teaching henna's origins. Lauren is also an avid crafter and has been known to finish the embroidery on a dress while waiting for the paint to dry on an illuminated manuscript left on the stove where her homemade bread is rising. Other interests include making temari balls, reading speculative fiction and fantasy, knitting, and sleep. Lauren is also in charge of making the iced Persian sekanjabins and sharbats sold at events.

Martin (as Suleiman) rests at a local Renn Fair.Martin Grover -aka- Suleiman ibn Ghazi
Turkish Coffee Maker, Drummer, Schmoozer.

Nobody knows Martin's real name at the events we go to. He's either Coffee Guy to those who have experienced our now near-legendary brew, or Drum Guy to those who want music. For the record, his SCA name is Suleiman ibn Ghazi. He has studied both classical Arabic and Lebanese street style darbuka, or dumbek. His other interests are studying religions, reading speculative fiction, and keeping the children from jostling Mama's arm while she is doing henna.
